Ríon Duffy Murphy is a socially engaged visual artist, based in Dublin. They hold a BFA in Textile Art & Artefact from NCAD and an MA in Gender Studies from UCD. They maintain a specific focus on creating art for their peers in the trans community and were previously Co-Director of the collective gender.RIP.
Ríon’s practice engages with themes of queerness, neurodivergence, intimacy, social connection, and gender. Their work primarily takes the form of textile sculptures and collaborative arts events.
“My most recent work explores connection and intimacy from a trans, neurodivergent perspective, through a series of interactive textile sculptures,” he explained to GCN.
“They are designed to be handled and feature distilled snippets of text from my writing, intended to draw the viewer in and make them an active participant in the work via touch and interpretation. The tension between playfulness and vulnerability is central to this work.
“Another main aspect of my practice is creating free spaces for trans and queer people to connect, socialise, learn creative skills, and create art. Within these spaces, dialogue is facilitated around particular themes, including community interdependence, (re)imagining a more accessible world, mapping anticapitalist queer utopias, and incorporating creativity and leisure as part of radical resistance and sustainability for marginalised communities.
“I am currently developing a durational, socially engaged, collaborative project, working with the trans community around themes of autonomy regarding visibility, community building, and ownership over one’s voice.”
