LGBT+Fund for Ireland
The Community Foundation for Ireland has been providing grants since 2000 and, due to its endowed fund, will be grant making long into the future. Grants given to LGBT+ groups through The Community Foundation for Ireland now total almost €1 million.
In 2018, Dublin Lesbian Line secured a grant of €5,000 for a research project to address the sexual harassment experienced by lesbian, bisexual and trans women. Also in 2018, Identity, facilitated by LGBT Ireland, got a grant of €7,500 to support LGBT asylum seekers who are living challenging lives in Direct Provision centres in Ireland.
While they have been providing grants since 2001, The Community Foundation for Ireland have recently established a dedicated LGBT+ Fund.
To date, while no individual donors - LGBT+ or straight - have donated to their dedicated LGBT+ Fund, a small but growing number of people have included the fund in their will, showing a great sign of strategic giving by the LGBT+ community for the LGBT+ community.
Articles about philanthropy often lead one to thinking that philanthropy is only for rich people. This is not the case. Community foundations worldwide are all about grassroots philanthropy. Niall O’Sullivan, Fund Development Advisor of The Community Foundation for Ireland, said, “We hope to see an increasing number of people of major or minor means choosing to support The LGBT+ Fund and in so doing to enjoy seeing the impact of their gifts. It’s an incredible privilege to be able to see the difference such support can make. The Community Foundation for Ireland is connecting donors to great causes.”
People can contribute to a common grassroots fund -The LGBT+ Fund - and make a real difference to address the community’s current and future needs. This can be through giving while living, or, as others have done, by including a gift in one’s will.
