LGBTQ + ALLY
AWARD RECIPIENT
Bohemian FC
Ireland’s oldest League of Ireland football club Bohemian FC has led the way in tackling homophobia, transphobia and prejudice in the sport. It was Ireland’s first professional football club to march in Dublin Pride, and has also established its own dedicated Pride committee and introduced events and initiatives such as the Pride of Dalymount Cup and the Pride on the Pitch programme.
Accepting the award for LGBTQ+ Ally of the Year at the GALAS, a club representative stated: “We know that sport is not the most welcoming of places for LGBTQ+ people, and football in particular. Over the last three years at Bohemian FC, we’ve tried to do our bit to increase queer visibility in football, and more widely in the country.”
The spokesperson went on to thank Mark Lane who founded GayBohs, the first LGBTQ+ supporters’ group for football in Ireland, as well as Ruadhán Ó Críodáin and the ShoutOut team, their partners at Dublin Devils FC, and the club’s Senior Administration Manager Jimmy Dignam.
