BABY DADDY?

Cinephiles, Audi Dublin International Film Festival 2018 (has it been a year already?) is back and bursting with an epic programme of top-quality films this month.

Full programme details are available on DIFF.ie where you can search by category (‘Silent cinema’, ‘documentaries’ etc.) or by the infinitely more interesting ‘experience’ (with titles like ‘Life Affirmers, ‘Guns a’ blazin’ and ‘Classic in the making’).

Our most eagerly-awaited piece is Spanish writer/director Carlos Marques-Marcet’s follow-up to his brilliant 10,000KM, a film that pondered the problem of long distance relationships. This time around, in Anchor and Hope, he’s pondering the issues that arise when a lesbian couple decide to have a baby with sperm donated by a straight friend.

Salsa teacher Eva and her girlfriend Kat live on a cramped houseboat in London. When their cat dies, Kat’s best friend, Roger comes to visit and drunken chatter sparks a suggestion that he might father a baby for the pair. Things, as they say, go awry.

Critics are heaping praise on Anchor and Hope, so tickets for its March 1st screening at 6.30pm in The Light House should go fast. We say, snap one up!
