PREPARE TO SHINE
As Dublin Pride gets ready to take over the Irish capital for its 2024 festival this June, find out what you can expect from the historic celebration.
In June 1974, a small group of LGBTQ+ activists marched from the Department of Justice on Stephen’s Green to the British Embassy on Merrion Road calling for the decriminalisation of homosexuality in Ireland. The historic moment is now considered to be Ireland’s first-ever Pride demonstration, and this year marks its monumental 50th anniversary.
The team at Dublin Pride are planning to celebrate in a big way, describing the 2024 event as its ‘Golden Jubilee’. Running from June 20-29, the theme ‘SHINE’ has been selected for the festival, to represent giving forth light, brightening up dark spaces and restoring the brilliance of things that have become dull. “Pride celebrates the light we all hold, but it is brightest when it is shared,” the team expressed. “We invite you to shine, both in your own pride, and to be a light for those who may be in the dark right now.”
The week of fantastic events will culminate in the legendary Pride Parade on June 29. Leading the charge will be Belong To, Ireland’s LGBTQ+ youth charity, alongside many of the fantastic young people who use the organisation’s services. Together, they have been selected as Grand Marshall, with Belong To CEO Moninne Griffith saying: “For over two decades, we have been there supporting LGBTQ+ young people when they need us providing information, guidance, and a place to come together, have fun and embrace who they are. This is what Pride is all about!
“This year, as we see increasing levels of hate directed at our community, we need a space to not only celebrate, but also unite, more than ever. We are overjoyed to lead this year’s Pride and can’t wait to embody this year’s theme and ‘Shine’ alongside hundreds of LGBTQ+ youth who will join Belong To at the Parade in June,” she continued.
“For many of these young people, this is their first time being out and proud and joining the wider community to celebrate their authentic selves. Pride means so much to the LGBTQ+ youth that we support, and we are grateful to Dublin Pride to mark their 50th anniversary by selecting the next generation of change-makers as the Grand Marshall,” Moninne concluded.
The Parade will start at 12pm on O’Connoll Street, before travelling down the quays, across Talbot Memorial Bridge, through Lombard Street, Westland Row and Lincoln Place and then concluding at Merrion Square. There, marchers will find Dublin Pride Village, open from 1-6pm. Anyone who pops by the park throughout the day will be in for a treat, with a food town, community city and a Neuro Pride space awaiting. While alcohol is not permitted in the site, there are copious amounts of bars nearby to quench anyone’s thirst should they so desire. What’s more, the Pride Village will feature a fabulous main stage hosted by drag favourites Phil T Gorgeous and Paul Ryder, accompanied by all the best tunes from DJ Ruth. Joining them across the afternoon will be a selection of unmissable performers, including Davina Devine, Regina George, Viola Gayvis, Dame Stuffy, Dublin Gay Men’s Chorus, Glória, Sparkle and Trad is Amach.
There truly is something for everyone, and the Dublin Pride team are also taking extra measures to improve the accessibility of the festival. For those who want to take part in the Parade, there will be accessible transport organised, and for anyone who wants to watch but not join in, there will also be special viewing areas available. There will similarly be transport arranged for those who want to join the party in Merrion Square, where additional accessibility features are planned. There will be an accessible entrance, a Changing Places toilet and exemptions on bag size limits.
