On March 8, the people of Ireland will be asked to vote on two referendums to change our constitution - the first refers to the definition of family under our constitution and the other concerns the role of women as caregivers in the home. If you’re anything like Ranae von Meding, perhaps these referendums have snuck up on you and you aren’t entirely sure what the changes might mean in practical terms were the referendums to pass.

In recent times it has often felt like the shadow of far-right extremists has been looming over our communities. In Ireland, we can see it in the shocking riots that happened in Dublin late last year or the anti-LGBTQ+ library protests that have been going on. When we shift our gaze towards continental Europe and the wider world, it becomes obvious that there too the far-right is gaining ground. But, as Swantje Mohrbeck describes, everywhere where the far-right is advancing, there are also people standing up to defend our communities.

One of the main misconceptions about asexuality is that all asexual people want absolutely nothing to do with sex. While this is accurate for some asexual people, it couldn’t be further from the truth for many others. Beatrice Fanucci spoke to members of the community to get the facts.

EUROPEAN MEN-WHO-HAVE-SEX-WITH-MEN AND TRANS PEOPLE INTERNET SURVEY

Your voice. Our strength.

The EMIS-2024 Ireland survey went live this February. It is the largest-ever survey about the sexual and mental health of gay and bisexual men and other cis or trans men who have sex with men. The European MSM Internet Survey (EMIS) multi-country, multi-language, anonymous online survey previously occurred in 2010 and 2017.

EMIS-2024 is a joint project of community, academic, and governmental partners across Europe, to inform sexual health interventions and programmes to better meet the needs of gbMSM. This research initiative is co-funded by the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) and the various ministries and other public institutions of Belgium, Estonia, Germany, Ireland, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, Switzerland, and Sweden. EMIS-2024 is managed by three partners: Deutsche Aidshilfe (National Umbrella Association for HIV Charities, Germany), Maastricht University (Netherlands), and the Robert Koch Institute (German Government Scientific Institution in Biomedicine).

Tamás Bereczky (EMIS-2024 Coordinator EEA/CH/IL) “With a huge variety of publications in local and international journals and other media, EMIS has become a renowned policy and advocacy tool and a scientific flagship project that demonstrates the strength and value of community-based science.

“EMIS relies greatly on a wide network of community organisations involved in LGBT, HIV/Sexual Health and gay or trans health issues. A group of more than 50 different organisations will work together to translate and disseminate the study and recruit as many gbMSM participants as possible.

“EMIS will supply important data for the entire region and for the participating countries that will help programmes better meet the needs of the different communities of gbMSM. A high response rate will continue straight to send a signal to governments that HIV and you sexual health are the still very important. It could also mean that services for gbMSM are adequately funded.”

Professor Fiona Lyons, (Clinical Lead, HSE Sexual Health and Crisis Pregnancy Programme) said that “here in Ireland we have successfully participated in EMIS 2010 and 2017 and MISI 2015. The EMIS Ireland Steering Committee, which is made up of various individuals, organisations, and networks including GHN, MPOWER, the Sexual Health Centre and the HSE, will disseminate the results locally. An EMIS-2024 Ireland promotion group will ensure the advertisement of the survey widely to recruit as many participants as possible. The survey results are central to understanding and meeting the needs of gbMSM in Ireland, so please consider participating in EMIS 2024”. According to Mick Quinlan (EMIS-2024 Ireland Promotion Working Group), “The community in Ireland has always contributed greatly to the surveys and though this one takes about 30 minutes ‘it’s worth it’ to make some space to complete it”.
