LGBTQ+ ALLY
AWARD RECIPIENT
Staff of Cork City Libraries
The staff of Cork City Libraries received this award for their display of unwavering allyship to the LGBTQ+ community in the face of intimidation by far-right protesters.
Since March, libraries in Cork have been targeted by farright agitators who tried to have LGBTQ+ books removed from their catalogue. Workers at the targeted locations have been subjected to harassment and verbal abuse, while the protesters filmed them without their consent. Despite this, they continued to support the community, defend freedom of information, and provide LGBTQ+ titles to young folks who need to access them.
During the award ceremony, a spokesperson for Cork City Library thanked the community, stating: “We are a universal service. That means everybody who walks through the doors has to be treated with the same respect.”
