Peter Out

One of the first out gay men to stand for election in Britain, our latest guest on Q+A, GCN’s Queer and Alternative podcast, Peter Tatchell has been campaigning vociferously and courageously for human rights for nearly half a century.

Peter talks to our editor, Brian Finnegan about his life and times – from coming out to his religious fundamentalist parents to overcoming fear in order to put himself in harm’s way for other people’s human rights through direct activism.

The podcast is both an education and an entertainment as Tatchell regales with tales of bemused bystanders at the first London Pride march, ‘outing’ bishops with the direct action group, Outrage!, and attempting not one but two citizen’s arrests on the notorious Zimbabwean President Robert Mugabe.

Ceaseless in the face of discrimination, Tatchell was detained during the World Cup season after staging a one-man protest against Russia’s treatment of LGBT+ people.

For those interested in queer history, this talk with one of our revolutionaries is unmissable stuff
