For our special issue on the Repeal the Eighth referendum

There has always been unwanted pregnancies and abortion. The Eighth pushes this fact under the carpet, leaving vulnerable people in Ireland not properly cared for. We need to stop the dangerous pretence; we need to repeal.

KATIE

35 years with such a hypocritical restriction is too long and repealing the eighth is the least we can do to ensure the pain endured by countless women, trans men and non-binary folk is a thing of the past.

PETER

Because we need to stop forcing people out of the country that’s supposed to be theirs in order to access a human right. It’s ridiculous that a woman’s ownership of her own body should come down to a public vote.

DAVE

While I believe it will make for a more kind, compassionate, supportive and equal society, ultimately I’m voting yes because it’s time for Ireland to finally show that we trust women.

I will vote yes for the many people who have been cruelly harmed by the presence of the Eighth Amendment and because 170,216 have travelled since 1980. It’s not good enough.

Whether you agree that it’s the right thing to do or not, Irish people are having abortions. Repealing the Eighth will mean they will be able to access healthcare, without being forced to travel or put their lives at risk.

The Eighth Amendment grossly negates women’s rights, bodily autonomy and equality. Separate church and state. Bodily autonomy and equality for women now! REPEAL the 8th!

I can’t time travel back to 1983 and stop the insertion of the Eighth Amendment into the Constitution, so I’ll settle for repealing it now. All people deserve access to the best healthcare in their own country.
